It is obvious anyone with a scar wants to see it fade away or at a minimum diminish in size.   Vitamin E oil has been getting the reputation as being a powerful healing agent.  Will Vitamin E oil for scars give you a dramatic improvement?

Starting with Science to Uncover the Mystery of Vitamin E Oil

With all of the folklore about Vitamin E oil being used for the treatment of scars scientists and doctors decided it was time to start seriously studying the impact of vitamin E oil for scars treatment.  In two interesting studies the results came back dramatically different.

In the first study a series of patients were given two bottles of an emollient to use for treating their surgical wounds.  They were carefully instructed to use one bottle for half of their wound and the other bottle for the second half.  They recorded their observations over the upcoming weeks.  Their physician recorded his observations, too.

At the end of the study there was no observable difference in the healing rate of the two sides of the wound.  Interestingly the side treated with Vitamin E oil showed a higher incidence of contact dermatitis.

In the second study Vitamin E oil was partnered with a silicone patch.  On group of patients was given patches with the Vitamin E Oil for scars while the other half were given plain patches.  In the course of the next several weeks it was determined the healing process of patients using the Vitamin E oil was improved.

What does this really tell us so far?  In both of these studies the treatment was applied to fresh wounds, not old scars.  The use of vitamin E oil in these cases did not show dramatic improvement.

What about Vitamin E Oil for Scars Which Are Already Healed?

This is an area where most evidence is still anecdotal evidence.  It is gathered from the observations, comments, and beliefs of a wide variety of people.  Here is the important thing to note.  Vitamin E oil is extremely safe and inexpensive.  Compared to most creams, lotions, and ointments created for the treatment of scars it will be the least expensive option.

The use of Vitamin E oil for scars has just as much or more evidence of effectiveness compared to these other solutions.  The important thing to understand is you will be conducting a personal experiment.  You should always buy your vitamin E oil in a bottle instead of relying on breaking open vitamin E capsules intended for dietary supplementation.  The bottled oil will be free of ingredients designed to improve taste, color, and digestibility.

Always test your vitamin E oil on a small portion of your skin before using it in large quantities.  Some people report sensitivity to the oil.  Consider doing your first applications from 15 to 30 minutes and then washing off the oil.  When you are sure you skin does not react adversely you can apply the oil for longer periods including overnight.

Will vitamin E oil for scars work for you?  Only you can answer this question.  Do not expect miracles, but you may be pleasantly surprised to see your scar lighten in color, depth, and intensity.
